What boat manufacturer is best?

Just like a Mercedes and a Saturn are both good automobiles there is a price difference between. You are getting more quality in one than the other. It’s the same with boats.

I am often asked by 1st time boat owners what are the brands or manufactures that I would recommend. Well it depends. Unlike cars there are thousands of more boat manufactures. Many boat manufactures are in business only a short time. Its not difficult to spot a quality boat when you see one or to realize a poorly manufactured boat.

The manufactures who make well made boats are too many to list and those whose boats are not very well made are to many to list. And since I have no wish to speak to any of their lawyers I shall list none on this web site.

The things to look for which would indicate that a boat was well made as opposed to poorly made are:

bulletThe hull to deck seam. This is the area that holds the upper deck to the hull. It is where the rub railing is set. The rub railing is that piece of plastic or rubber that circles the boat. Is this seam secured by rivets, screws or bolts. Bolts are best rivets are cheapest.
bulletHow thick is the hull. If you shine a flashlight from the inside of the hull how much light transverses to the outside. Is the hull paper thin.
bulletWhat kind of engine does it have a 4, 6, or 8 cylinder. Does the boat have extra power or just enough to get by.
bulletIs the engine fresh water or raw water cooled. (As discussed earlier).
bulletHow much is the boat. The fact that "you get what you pay for" is very true when it comes to boats. Higher priced boat are usually better made. If you don’t mind research go to the library and look up the boat you wish to purchase.
bulletTry looking up what a new boat sell for and then look up a 4 year old model. How much value did it loose? In four years did the boat decrease 10% 15% or 50% of what a newer model lists for. That decrease is the loss of boat equity. While we expect all car to depreciate we also expect boat to depreciate, but how much is the question. This gets tricky especially when you have additions or add on's, but is worth a day at the library. What does the boat weigh, try pricing the boat by the pound.

Last, don’t be scared away by inexpensively manufactured boats. You may not need a boat that will last you 50 years if you only intend to keep the boat 5 years. A boat that handles great in rough ocean seas may not be necessary if your boating is limited to the bay. An inexpensive boat that fills your boating needs may be the best choice.
