Boat Seller Responsibilities

A seller is responsible for commissioning the boat. This means getting it tuned up, and placed into the water for a sea trial and any cost associated with having it fully cleaned and operational for inspection.

A seller is responsible for supplying a captain to pilot a boat. A surveyor never pilots a boat. A surveyor is much too busy addressing the various system of the boat to pilot it. Since a surveyor inspects boats over a wide geographical area he may not be familiar with the waters that the boat is being sea tested in. Of course the seller can captain the boat if he so wishes.

bulletThe seller is responsible for removal of any personal items or accessory equipment that does not come with the boat and will hamper the surveyor in his inspection of the vessel. Compartments must be clear and removed of personal items.
bulletAll electronic and electrical equipment must be on the vessel set up for inspection in working order. If any item is being sold with the boat it should be ready for demonstration by the seller or the sellers representative.
bulletThe seller is responsible for selecting a marina that the boat could be haul out of water for inspection by the surveyor. The seller is responsible for delivering the boat to the marina and for setting up a haul out time that would be conducive to the surveyor. The seller is sometimes but not always responsible for having the boat hull below the waterline power washed for inspection.

These are the items that a broker performs for a seller and often many times over for each prospective buyer. This is why sales through brokers go smother with less difficulties.
