Safety equipment

Proper safety equipment must be provided for all vessel in accord with standards specified by the USCG and sometimes because it makes good sense. These include such equipment as:

  1. Personal flotation Devices (PFD'S).  One must be available for each person aboard.  Children should have properly sized PFD's.
  2. A flare gun or hand held flares with updated flares.  Expired flares may be kept and used first in an emergency.
  3. A life ring is required on all vessel of 26 feet or more.
  4. Horn in working order.
  5. A medical first aide kit for use in emergencies. (Not require by USCG.).
  6. Navigational lighting must be in accord with USCG regulations and COLREG.
  7. Anchors must provide stability in extreme weather conditions.  Rode should be well maintained.   Enough anchor line must be provided.  Anchor hardware must not be rusted or corroded.
  8. Deck hardware must be in good condition.  Life lines must be secure, stanchions must be well maintained.
  9. Flashlights should be available when boating at night.
  10. Navigational equipment as depth finders, GPS, chart plotter, auto pilots,  VHF radio, radar, and compass must all be working.
  11. Fog horn or bell should be provided.
  12. Sea anchors on vessels where needed.

Boat Surveyors generally recommend safety equipment when needed.  Inspection of safety equipment is always an important part of any survey.  All of the above items when present on a boat being surveyed are thoroughly examined.  Recommendations are often made if safety equipment needs repair or replacement.  Long Island Marine Surveyor includes a Remark & Recommendations Section in all of our surveys that specifically addresses safety equipment.
